Poor Fare At Harmsworth Park by Easton Thain

After the dusting by Auchinleck Talbot the Jags looked to bounce back on Saturday but faced a tough ask on the trip to Caithness where Wick Academy were looking to make it four successive league wins over Thistle at Harmsworth Park on the spin. In what proved to be a drab and lacklustre encounter in which both teams made numerous mistakes it was the ‘Scorries’ who achieved their goal as they bagged a couple of their chances although the second is not one Darren Strong will want to recall. The final score was a wee bit harsh on Thistle but to be honest they never looked like scoring. The Jags lacked some guile up front and there was no real buzz in midfield but they did have one or two decent chances. Of the team on the day Scott Adams looked the liveliest whilst ‘Zico’ Davidson also put in a shift..

The Jags began well enough and created a chance in just 39 seconds when Shaun Wood fed Liam Baxter but his shot was deflected away for a fruitless corner. Wick responded in the 8th minute when Davie Allan sent the ball into Richard Macadie but under pressure he shot wide. Seven minutes later a fine long ball over the top from Jay Cheyne set Liam Baxter free, he moved in on goal but his final shot went wide. The Academy took advantage of this two minutes later when Richard Macadie slid the ball through to Davie Allan who was given too much room and he drilled his shot into the far corner of the net. Thistle obviously didn’t learn from this as in the 20th minute there was nearly an exact repeat, this time Grant Campbell slid the ball through to the unmarked Davie Allan who again aimed a drive for the far corner of the net but this time it struck the post and from a tight angle Gary Weir hit the follow up into the side netting. Very little happened after that with just one chance occurring and it fell to the Jags ten minutes before the break when Iain MacRae sent in a decent cross which Scott Adams met but his header had no power and Sean MacCarthy saved with ease.

There were more chances in the second half and three minutes in a corner into the Jags box was not fully cleared and when the ball came back in it broke for Grant Steven but his shot was deflected wide. Ten minutes into the half Donnie Munro sent a fine ball through to Liam Baxter who had a great chance but his final shot was weak and the keeper saved with ease. In the 59th minute at the other end Davie Allan drilled in a low cross which was met by a diving header from Sam Mackay but this effort flew wide. Five minutes on at the other end Scott Adams sent in a great ball which Andy Low played on to ‘Zico’ Davidson but a defender nipped in to clear. With twenty minutes left Grant Campbell fed Sam Mackay who fired in a fierce drive but the ball few narrowly over. In the 73rd minute a Liam Baxter cross fell to Andy Low but he sliced his shot, the ball fell to Scott Adams whose ball in was half cleared to Donnie Munro but he drove over. Four minutes later Ross Allan thundered in a drive only to see Darren Strong pull of a super stop. Such is the life of a keeper though that you can be a hero one moment and then a villain the next and sadly the latter was the case with eight minutes left as a howler from Darren ensured Wick secured all three points. Sam Mackay sent in a free kick which Lukasz Geruzel met but his header dawdled goal-wards and should have been easily caught by Darren Strong but all he did was help the ball into the net and that killed the match off stone dead.

Another poor day for Thistle but they cannot mope about it and now must give it even more effort in their next match. That sees the return derby with Deveronvale take place in Banff and it should be as close as the first clash last month. Both teams confidence is down but there would be no greater pick-me-up than winning against your bitterest rivals so both teams will be gunning for that. It is a massive match for the Jags who desperately need a positive result after no win in three and nine goals conceded to two netted. A positive result could work wonders but a defeat will really dent morale and that is the last thing needed before the next game against Brora Rangers at Victoria Park!
