Stirring Display By The Young Guns by Easton Thain
The Jags U-20’s got back to winning ways with a comfortable win over their Inverurie Locos counterparts and some of the play of a young Thistle combine – Darren Wood was the ‘old man’ of the team at 26! – was a joy to behold and standing out up front was Robert Scott, just shy of 17, who showed a maturity beyond his years as he held the ball up well, set off on piecing runs and he always looked a goal threat. The first team experience of Drew Copeland Shaun Wood and Kyle Gauld was also evident as they looked a class apart but all the lads played well on the night. Credit to Locos, who also had a young team out, as they made a fist of it but the Jags were deserved winners and in doing so they scored three excellent goals.
Just nine minutes in Kyle Gauld fed Drew Copeland who set up Robert Scott, he fired the ball home but was ruled offside. Locos had a chance four minutes on when a deep cross found Kyle Gordon who headed past Jamie Fraser across the goal but the ball was cleared. 60 seconds later a Thistle corner saw the ball helped on to Drew Copeland for a great chance but from close range he fired the ball over. In the 19th minute though the Jags took the lead when a break led to Drew Copeland finding Shaun Wood whose ball in fell to Robert Scott who showed fine control before firing it home. It developed into a midfield stalemate for a while until nine minutes before half-time when Shaun Wood delivered a great ball into the box which Kyle Gauld met with a fine header but the ball was cleared. A minute before the break Harry Noble set Kyle Gauld free, he ran in and shot but Morgan Cook made a fine save.

Four minutes into the second half Kyle Gauld fed Drew Copeland who sent in a great cross presenting a chance for Liam Gordon but the ball was just cleared. Locos responded in the 53rd minute when the ball was fed to Paul Gee but he shot wide. Two minutes on at the other end Liam Gordon sent in a brilliant cross but the ball was just cleared away. Another quiet period followed before, in the 70th minute, the points were all but secured with a fine goal. Remembering his bounding run for the first team in the match at Clachnacuddin, Darren Wood set off on another charge down the left before delivering a great low cross which was expertly turned home by Drew Copeland. Five minutes on Liam Gordon superbly won the ball about 20 yards out but then got a rush of blood to the head and sliced his shot well wide. A minute before the end the win was tied up with a stupendous solo goal as Kyle Gauld picked the ball up in midfield before racing through leaving defenders trailing in his wake and he finished off by neatly sending a shot past the onrushing Morgan Cook.

There was plenty of encouragement for the now and not just the future in this game and interim gaffer Graeme Stewart was well impressed by the display of his young charges and he would have certainly been given food for thought. The future is bright, it’s green and white! The U-20’s have two difficult fixtures scheduled before the end of the year away to Fraserburgh and then Cove Rangers, the latter three days before Xmas
