Young Guns Unlucky by Easton Thain

For the first time this season the Jags Aberdeenshire League side tasted defeat when they went down by the only goal of the game to their Deveronvale counterparts at Princess Royal Park. With the first team match two days later it was a less experienced U-20 side that took the field in Banff but they were still unfortunate to go down and should have had a penalty awarded to them.

Thistle had the first chance in the 7th minute when a cross fell to Kyle Gauld but he shot wide. Vale got the goal that mattered eight minutes later when a ball through from Kieran Cowie cut out Matthew Steer, it ran to Paul Sutherland who slotted it past the advancing Jamie Fraser. The Jags responded with a direct free-kick a minute later but Scott Adams curled this wide and in the 21st minute a similar fate befell a free-kick from Stuart Hodge. Eleven minutes on a fine move from a throw in saw Mike Wood find Kyle Gauld who set up Drew Copeland in the box, he was clearly baulked but no penalty was awarded. In the 36th minute Scott Adams went wandering before firing in a shot but the keeper made an easy save.

Five minutes later Thistle forced three corners in succession but from the latter Ben Stewart shot wide. In the 41st minute a ball through found Kyle Gauld who smacked in a swerving shot but Rhys Fyfe pulled off a fine stop

Two minutes into the second half John Urquhart fired in a shot but it went over the Jags bar. In the 49th minute Drew Copeland drove over a low cross which Mike Wood met first time but he shot wide. Just after the hour Michele Lombardi broke through the defence only to be denied by a fine stop by Jamie Fraser. Sixteen minutes later Drew Copeland saw a thumping drive tipped over by Rhys Fyfe. From the corner the ball was only half cleared and fell to Stewart Fraser but his drive was blocked. In the 79th minute the Vale sub Callum Carmichael raced through on goal before firing in a drive but Jamie Fraser pulled off a fine save. The final chance fell to the Jags two minutes from time but Scott Adams blasted over from a free-kick.

Overall Thistle played some fine football but they lacked the cutting edge that they had shown in previous matches and that was their downfall. Kyle Gauld and Drew Copeland were the best players on the night. The next match is on November 10th at home to Keith.
